I've seen like 6 topics regarding this in the last three weeks or so.
There is a general tier system I use when deciding what to equip when I solo via swordplay.
Level 77-82 (T - VT)

Sub ninja and equip for defense. Wear as much fast-cast and haste gear as possible without sacrificing defense. You basically want to be able to take a hit. Don't worry about your accuracy because you should have about 50-60% with only a little bit of gear on. Eat tavnazia tacos.
Key equipment:
Genbu shield
Cheviot Cape
Jelly Ring
Warlock's Chapeau
Narasimha Vest (or my recently acquired duelist's tabard)
Accuracy or vitality in the neck slot.
Suppanomimi (even when not dual wielding, +5 acc and att)
Warlock's Boots (shield skill and agility)
Light Gauntlets or Warlock's Gloves.
If monster TP gain is a concern and you have a lot of time, use a ceremonial dagger or 2, with enspells and DOTs for your damage.
Level 70-77 (high DC <-> low T)

I pick evasion gear. And sub ninja (thief if I can get away with it). usually dual wield. Key pieces of equipment:
Evasion torque, duelist boots, mst. cst. mitts. and +6 evasion skill merits. (basically as much +skill as possible) Then I space out the rest of my slots for agility and evasion gear. Special emphasis for gear with both stats (like nomad's mantle).
Narasimha vest, or blue cotehardie makes a nice body piece for this configuration. Joyeuse and Martial anelace if dual wielding.
Level 65-70, a mix of evasion and attack gear
Below level 65 (easy prey and below)

Equip for massive damage. It shouldn't be difficult to achieve your max sword damage with a relatively small gil investment (less than 1m gil)... sub warrior for extra damage, or thief for drops.
Key equipment:
Joyeuse
Genbu Shield, or strike shield for a little extra umph
Ogre/shadow mask
Thunder Gorget (swap in for savage blade bonus)
Assault Jerkin
Amemet mantle (or +1)
warwolf belt
Duelist's/Warlock's Tights or Dusk Trousers if you're loaded.
Ogre Ledelsens
Strength rings.
Eat: attack food, like meat mithkabobs
I've been able to consistently hit for max damage (around 108 hp per hit with a joyeuse) on monsters as high as 64ish with this setup while subbing WAR (560+ attack, +30 str). And as you can see, it's relatively inexpensive to equip yourself in this way (rare/ex gear can be hard to get though). And Vorpal Blade spam for 600=700 is priceless.
Out of all three modes of fighting, the cost of doing so is probably ranked (lowest to highest) is probably: Attack -> Defense -> Evasion.
There's a lot of disgustingly good attack and defense gear for red mages which is dirt cheap. The evasion setup is a little pricey because rdm evasion gear can often be used by many premier evasion jobs such as ninja and thief... so the demand can be on the high side for those items.
[Nice To Meet You.]!
[Premium][Can i have it?]
[Thank you.]
