Remember that the anvil has a mind of its own and generally the anvil always wins. This guide will not guarantee success in your upgrading goals. Also, this guide is not necessarily for beginners who have no upgrading experience. THIS IS NOT A GUARANTEE!
Basics
When upgrading, it is best to wait for "breaks," that is, when you or another player destroys an item by upgrading (also known as burns). You can tell when another player breaks an item by the red glow radiated from the anvil. The more consecutive breaks you see, the better chance the next item will have for an upgrade. A successfully upgraded item will make the anvil emit a bright glow.
Breaking an Item
Yes, to become learned in upgrading, one must also know how to break items. As explained earlier, breaking an item will make the next item more likely to upgrade. Forcing items to break helps in this sense. The easiest items to find and burn are paper armor at +5, Full Plate +5 armor from Skeleton-type monsters, and +1 high class items using High Class Upgrade Scrolls. You will need about ten of these items. The more, the better, since there is still a chance of upgrading them.
Break Chart for Lesser High Class Items
Use a Blessed Upgrade Scroll to upgrade.
Items +1 to +3 need no breaks
Items +3 to +4 need one break
Items +4 to +5 need two breaks
Items +5 to +6 need three breaks
Items +6 to +7 need four breaks (Trina's Piece recommended)
Break Chart for Greater High Class Items
Use a Blessed Upgrade Scroll to upgrade.
Items +1 to +3 need no breaks
Items +3 to +4 need three breaks
Items +4 to +5 need four breaks
Items +5 to +6 need five breaks or three breaks with a Trina's Piece
Items +6 to +7 need for or five breaks (Trina's Piece recommended)
Break Chart for Unique Weapons
Use a Blessed Upgrade Scroll beyond +0.
Weapons +0 to +1 need no breaks with Blessed Elemental Scroll
Weapons +1 to +3 need no breaks
Weapons +3 to +4 need three breaks
Weapons +4 to +5 need four breaks
Weapons +5 to +6 need five breaks or three breaks with Trina's Piece
Weapons +6 to +7 need four or five breaks (Trina's Piece recommended)
Weapons +7 to +8 need eight breaks with Trina's Piece
Break Chart for Adding Enchantments to Armors
Armors at +6 need three breaks
Armors at +7 need four breaks
Break Chart for Adding Elemental to Weapons
Weapons at +6 need three breaks
Weapons at +7 need four breaks
Waiting for Breaks
Since waiting for seven consecutive breaks at the anvil is a bit unreasonable, you may want to force these breaks yourself. The best time to do this is immediately after a server restart. Few players will be on and the anvil will be all yours. If you do wait for breaks however, be sure you have your finger ready to upgrade the item. If you hesitate, another player may take the consecutive breaks away from you and you will have to continue to wait.
Scroll Placement Theory
A theory was stated in which the placement of your scrolls in the anvil slots can determine your success. Let it be so that the slots are numbered as they would be on a standard keypad:
7 . 8 . 9
4 . 5 . 6
1 . 2 . 3
The scroll placement is described below:
Slot 1- Upgrading +4 to +5
Slot 2- None
Slot 3- Upgrading +6 to +7
Slot 4- Elemental or Enchant Upgrades or Upgrading +7 to +8
Slot 5- Elemental or Enchant Upgrades
Slot 6- None
Slot 7- Upgrading +5 to +6
Slot 8- None
Slot 9- Upgrading +3 to +4
Remember, THIS IS NOT A GUARANTEE! I wish everyone good luck!
