I'm tryin to help a friend fix his LOTRO game and have run completely out of ideas.

Computer specs are Athlon 64 3000+
1 gig DDR400 RAM
ATI x800 Video Card
some crappy 5400rpm hard drive =P
Not sure of the rest of the specs but thats the main stuff :)

Anyhow... he can get into the game fine, it's a little laggy but bearable. After 5-10 minutes the screen will turn black, and after 30 seconds the monitor will lose it's signal and the machine must be hard-booted.

He's tried 3 different video card drivers, including original drivers, the most recent, and one inbetween. He has all windows updates, antivirus and antispyware up-to-date and ran them all. Also he's turned them all off. We tried cleaning the video card too of dust, thinking it might be overheating, but to no prevail.

Running out of ideas here. He just reloaded the computer less then 3 weeks ago and it runs WoW and other games just fine. My computer's specs are pretty close to his cept I have a better hard drive and processor (p4 2.8 dual core) and it runs just fine for me.

Any ideas?

Maybe need one of the following...
.NET FRAMWORK 1.0
.NET FRAMWORK 2.0
Latest Direct X
or maybe you need to uninstall/reinstall your windows service packs.

These are all that I can think of which may solve your problem apart from a diffrent video driver but you said you've tried it.

I had this problem on another game was obviously too good for my system specs. Generally the first thing was my Power Supply... Maybe his power supply is just now reaching its max. Should really tell him to get more RAM and a better HD.

also I wouldnt yet rule out that your gpu is overheating. Make sure you can visibly see the fan moving when your pc is on. I had a fan go bad on my 9800 pro and my x800xt. I had to send them to ati. I had one that spun too but its spindle wasstripped to the fan so it moved, but it moved alot less rpms.
