To start, here is
the problem:
FFXI's newest update seems to have an interface problem with 99% of the
USB KEYBOARDS AND MICE out there right now. There are several things related to the problem:
1. Additional Keys on a keyboard (volume control, hotkeys, play, stop, rewind, etc.). They all seem to be causing an interface error slowing down FFXI's FPS by a good 10-20 FPS alone.
2. Additional parts of a mice, for instance: magnifying or scrolling seems to greatly effect the FPS.
Here are 3 Temp Fixes you can do:
Temp Fix 1:
1. Unplug your USB Keyboard AND USB Mouse.
Alternately: You can use a USB to PS/2 adapter if your computer can use one, that should fix the problem with ONE of your pieces of hardware.
Temp Fix 2:
1. Go to your Device Manager (Usually: Start > Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager)
2. Expand the "Human Interface Devices" block in the Device Manager Window.
3. DISABLE ALL DEVICES STARTING WITH
"HID". AND
ONLY THOSE THAT BEGIN WITH
"HID"!!! Anything other than that will disable the WHOLE drive, which is NOT what we want.
Temp Fix 3:
1. Don't play FFXI until SE fixes their biggest fuck-up yet.
NOTE: Temp Fix 2 will ONLY disable the EXTRA buttons on your keyboard/mouse, so you can STILL USE the keyboard/mouse in-game and out of it, almost normally, but you won't be able to use those "extras" until you enable those HID devices again.

FAQ:
Q. I don't see "HID" anywhere!!! Help me!!!
A. If you don't have "HID" in your Device Manager, you're !@#$%^&* out of luck, and can't use Temp Fix 2, so you'll have to stick with 1 or 3 till this is solved.
Q. Can I still use my Keyboard/Mouse with Temp Fix 2?
A. Yes, but the "extra" buttons on your keyboard will NOT be able to be used until it's re-enabled.
Q. Will SE fix this?
A. At the rate they go, who knows? They're following Microsoft's example:
(!empty($user->lang['QUOTE'])) ? $user->lang['QUOTE'] : ucwords(strtolower(str_replace('_', ' ', 'QUOTE'))):
Why test it ourselves if we can have the players do it?
Q. How can I see what my FPS is literally at instead of guessing?
A. You need Azaril's Windower's FPS Plugin to view what your FPS is. Download the Windower at:
