On the level Halo, where Johnson dies, its possible to keep him alive. Heres how you do it.

At the last door where a intermission starts (Before the control room), shoot Johnson in the head, and quickly go near the last door to start the intermission. It will only work if he is dead.

Progress on and kill the Monitor, when you activate the ring and the intermission is over, where you last shot Johnson, his body should be on the floor and will revive.

You get a extra man to help you, but he wont follow you when you leave the room (When you reach outside).
