If you played the original Starcraft, you should have a good idea of what the Starcraft 2 Extractor trick is.
The only time this is worthwhile is if you are currently out of supplies and are waiting on an Overlord to come out. If you are 10/10, you could build an Overlord, then do the Starcraft 2 Extractor trick while waiting on your Overlord to pop out. For more strategies, be sure to check out this Starcraft 2 guide. There is no point in using this technique in any other situation.
Note that the Starcraft 2 Extractor trick is a completely normal game mechanic; it is part of the Zerg race and was intentionally brought over from Starcraft 1 to Starcraft 2. It is a fairly insignificant trick that good players can use to gain a very minor advantage over players who do not go through the effort of using this tactic.
If you are unfamiliar with it, here is how it works:
1. Get your supplies to the top of your current limit (such as 10 out of 10 supplies used).
2. Build an Extractor.
3. While the Extractor is building, your supply count will drop down to 9/10. Build a Drone to get your supply count to 10/10.
4. Cancel your Extractor to get your Drone back. You will now be at 11/10 supplies.
I cannot stress enough how insignificant this tactic is. In fact, many people who use this trick end up drawing even or worse, losing a few seconds. When you cancel your Extractor, you lose 6 minerals. Since items and units in game are only spent in “5s”, losing 6 minerals is essentially losing 10; you will not be able to buy a Drone with 49 minerals!
As a result, players using the Starcraft 2 Extractor trick need to be sure that they are saving enough time to make it worthwhile. I figure it takes about 10 seconds for 1 Drone to collect 10 minerals, so you need to be sure that your Overlord is not going to be finished before 10 seconds is up!
You also have to factor in that the Drone being turned into an Extractor is not doing any harvesting. You need to use hotkeys (“B” and “E” for Build Extractor, “S” and “D” for Select Larva and Build Drone, and finally hit the escape key to cancel the Extractor).
Since Overlords take 25 seconds to create, I have found a safe rule of thumb is to not perform the Extractor trick if the Overlord is already halfway done. If the Overlord is already halfway done, it will be more efficient to just wait until it is done and build two Drones at that point.
Note that this is just for starting out. If the enemy rushes, you may need to perform the Starcraft 2 Extractor trick to squeeze out a few offensive units.
