After aceing once, you "can" drop your skill, and ace again either with the same or different faction. Pre NGE ( don't play any more, nge sucks !@#$%^&*), there were 9 possible ace combat badges-3 of each faction.
If you were to set up a tier 2 ship with ace level stuss (like level 8 guns, level 8 shields, level 8 capasiter, level 10 droid interface, etc... just pimp it out with CANNONS ONLY. (no missles or ammo needing weapons), then you can use it as soon as you have access to the tier 2 ship-with all the high level stuff intact... so you'd havae your full assortment of droid commands, high end guns, good engines, etc...
You can NOT alter your ship in any way untill you have the necessary skill to do so, so whatever setup you choose will be what you've got untill you reach a high enough level to legitemately use those componets (so no reloading proton launchers-just stick with cannons). You will have to have your super ship in one slot when you drop ace status, and have an empty slot available for the starter ship (it's a good idea to drag out your starter ship, and outfit it with level 3 and 5 stuff for the other slot).
With the addition of new ships since I've layed, if there are any that can be flown by 2 or more factions (a generic ship) then you could have one primed to be useable when you get to that ship's level.
It's also a hell of a lot of fun to go flying around as a 2111 pilot demolishing aces who get real huffy when you can show them a screen shot of your piloting skill window while talking to them. makes them feel like a completely worthless pos to be beaten by a noob pilot.
This works best for neutral pilots, the kimogula's 3 cannon weapon systems and 130k mass is a natural choice for beefing up. the y-wing longprobe is also good. the imps' are hosed -again- as they've got the worst ships in space. (at least as far as the ships available up to the addition of the mining ship, jedi starfighter (a real pos), heavy x wing (my fav)... (the ROTW expansion that came out right before the nge).
Since the nge had no effect on space (other than a linear piloting progression), it should still work-if they still have the 3 different badges per faction, or if there are universal ships now available.

The best way is still to pick up a Heavy variant starter ship (Z-95, Scyk, TIE) and once you Ace outfit it with your best parts, then drop Master pilot and pick up a profession in the same faction. The heavy variants of the starter ships can be used instantly and all the way through. I grind out Level 8 reward guns like this, have Aced all pilot professions and get the 4x bonus, and it only take me around a few hours (at most) to get to the last trainer.
