Medic is a starting profession and quite possibly, one of the most useful around. The Organic Chemistry skill tree is a requirement for training Novice Bio-Engineer, and Master Medic is required for both Master Doctor and Master Combat Medic. Even if you don't wish to become a master, training just a few boxes in this profession will serve you and your hunting companions quite well. With just three or four boxes trained you can make basic stimpaks, diagnose the health of those around you, heal their health and action wounds (and your own), stop bleeding, and use stimpaks, even if you're engaged in combat.

To begin the medic profession you simply need to find a trainer, and train Novice Medic, which costs 100 credits and 15 skill credits. With Novice you will be able to make and use Stimpak As, and heal wounds at a basic level.

There are two types of experience needed to master medic. The three left trees require Medical xp. The far right tree is mastered with medical crafting xp. Medical crafting is just what it sounds like. You get the xp by making stims or the components they require. Medical crafting requires a food and chemical crafting tool (you receive the schematic for making your own when you train Novice Medic). To make the tool you need:

10 chemical
16 metal
8 mineral

If you use very high conductivity copper for both the metal and mineral, you will be able to make a fairly decent tool. You can generally buy high quality tools for a reasonable price on many of the bazaars.

To make a small Stimpak A, you need

8 Inorganic
8 Organic

Any type of metal, mineral, gas, or chemical can be used for the Inorganic and any type of food, hide, bone, or meat can be used for the Organic. You can grind through the entire tree making those, or you can choose another product as you advance.

Medical experience is gained by using stims or wound packs to heal yourself or others. Experience can be gained quickly by healing entertainers in cantinas, or by healing friends during combat. At Organic Chemistry II you will be able to use Small Stimpak Bs. These are very effective if they are of good quality. You can heal someone for 400 health and action with a good Stim B and a box or two in First Aid. Note that healing takes from your mind bar, so the use of mind enhancing foods, or mind buffs is useful if you 're doing lots of healing in a short period of time.

Diagnose is one of the skill trees in Medic. To check someone's health, target them and type /diagnose. This brings up a little box which will show you all of their wounds and battle fatigue. You can heal these wounds if you are inside a camp, or a building. There are six different wound packs needed; health, strength, constitution, action, stamina, and quickness.

Grinding medic

There are always those who wish to master the profession as quickly as possible. Grinding stimpaks in practice mode will give you xp for the Organic Chemistry tree. While you can grind the higher level stims as you advance, Stimpak As take only 2 ingredients. You can create a macro to help, and never need to change it. As it's only one tree, it will go quickly even though the xp is not coming in great amounts.

The other three trees can be gained quickly by finding a very busy cantina and healing the entertainer's action bars. An even faster way is to have a Marksman who has Ranged Support II trained create a tumble macro using the following commands:

/tumble to standing;
/ui action toolbarSlot00;

*notes the 00 signifies the F1 tool slot. If they use a different slot to put the macro in, that number would be the number of the Function slot - 1.*

The Marksman uses the tumble macro while the medic heals them every few tumbles. You can progress through all three trees very quickly.

Skills and How They Work

At Novice Medic you receive skills to Heal and Tend both Damage and Wounds. The difference between Damage and Wounds is the color on the HAM bars. Damage shows up as white on the bars, and Wounds show up as black. You can heal damage on the Health and Action bars using stimpaks. To heal wounds on those bars, you use wound packs. Tending wounds doesn't require a wound pack but it causes damage to your mind pool, which can only be healed by an entertainer. Using stimpaks and wound packs gives more xp, causes no permanent damage to you, but does require that you have the packs available.
