Bubbles of Fun? - Written by: Xen_Ji_Woo
There is a phrase I use at work when I am installing new software, which is, "Watching the blue bar go from left to right." It's not fun, in fact, it's downright boring. I could think of thousands of other things I could be doing (mostly playing Vanguard) than watching that line go from left to right.
Fast forward to the evening and we are into a session of Vanguard. Do you know what boggles my mind? People are caught up in watching the bar go from left to right; the experience meter, measuring the progress until your next level. Something I despise doing, but is a necessary evil in the workplace, is being counted as fun in my free time.
Why do we have the need to measure our fun based on progress? Can we not simply have fun by logging in, joining a good group and laying waste to mobs, or finding a new patch of land? Perhaps crafting a few bobbles or parlaying a new set of diplomacy cards?
Maybe you will meet some new people, some that may even share your interests. Imagine that, other people play with you in MMOs! It's not for everyone, but there is fun to be had role playing, dressing up, or just tooling around town. Find a mailbox and dance your heart away if you please.
The fun does not start at the end game, else we would all log in as level fifty characters. The progression is meant to be fun as well. Now I'm not saying that I do not enjoy gaining levels, but it is always the most exciting to me when I have lost track of that experience bar and get a surprising DING!
