I have never seen that occur yet.
I can be personally out of aggro range, and send my pet across the room (into the den) and it will only bring the mob i have targeted back to me.

That's probably true, but I have had multiple groups of aggro mobs aggro me at the same time. Not more than the group will come if you aggro one and as long as you stay out of aggro range you'll only get the group you pulled.
I think there is a slight misunderstanding of the difference.
One (EQ) is the idea that all aggro mobs close together will aggro if one is aggroed, even from a distance.
Two (EQ2) is the idea that only certain mobs are linked and if you aggro one of them the other will always come no matter what, but they will not aggro other mobs near them unless you come within the others aggro range.
I think the first is more realistic and the second is more predictable.
