That is the version that crashes. Not sure what version it is that works, 3.0.22 something like that, but greater than 7. You need to turn auto update off and make sure your over-writting the correct DLL.

i think you are doing what i did... the dll that you replace is not the one in the xunleashed folder... its the one in plugins/eq2unleashed folder

right click on the dll, get its version. Make sure it is the correct version.
Then load up XU. Drag the plugin (eq2unleashed) it has there to the uninstall line.
Close XU.
Replace the dll in the plugins folder manually.
Load up XU. Make sure the dll version in that folder is still the correct one.
Now manually add the plugin to XU. It should verify the dll version.
Uncheck auto-update plugins, and play.

Yes, mobs are considered NPC's.

Ensure you are unchecking both NPC checkboxes, the one to show names and the one to make them show up entirely

Yes. That is disabled in this version right now. That was the problem with the client crashing. Everytime it read the config.ini it crashed. Also don't try to sort based on colors. Thats crashes it also.

Doesn't seem to want to respond to any choices I make in what to show. I only have objects and background selected and it's still showing me everything.

yes... the patch of eq2 today made all npc's and pc's and others count as objects... so it will all show up...not sure what they can do to fix it
