Armor is equipment that is worn to increase defense against damage dealt by foes, provide attribute bonuses and change a character's appearance. There are six pieces of armor which can be worn: headgear, shoulderwear, coats, gloves, leggings and boots.
Armor is divided into three levels, light, medium, and heavy. Each profession can only wear one level of armor:
Scholars wear light armor.
Adventurers wear medium armor.
Soldiers wear heavy armor.
Armor can be acquired in several different ways:
Purchased from an armorsmith.
Crafted through the disciplines of the armorsmith, leatherworker, and tailor.
Dropped by a foe as loot.
As a reward from the Hall of Monuments.
As a PvP reward from a glory vendor.

PAX East Preview: Izzy on Attributes and Iteration
http://www.arena.net/blog/pax-east-prev ... -iterationUpgrade components
Every piece of armor comes with a slot that can be used to apply an upgrade component, which grant additional combat bonuses to the armor. Each upgrade component has six levels of bonuses. For example, for each Superior Rune of the Warrior a character has equipped, he gains one extra bonus from the Superior Rune of the Warrior bonus list. If the Rune is added to each of the six armor pieces, all of the bonuses that the upgrade provides will be unlocked.
Repair
Guild Wars 2 includes armor repair system. Every time a character is defeated (after being downed and failing to rally) one piece of armor gets damaged. Once all armor pieces are damaged, they will break, and the character will have to repair or replace it.

ArenaNet’s reasoning makes a certain amount of sense:
(!empty($user->lang['QUOTE'])) ? $user->lang['QUOTE'] : ucwords(strtolower(str_replace('_', ' ', 'QUOTE'))):
Customized dye should be something that denotes your characters progress, like better looking, more elaborate gear. As you spend more time on your character, they grow and gain access to more customization options. If we make dyes account based, this progression will only happen on one character. We wanted character customization to remain tied to the character but we felt that one-time-use dyes discouraged players from customizing as often as they would like, that is how we arrived at the current system.
