Well, it's best to look through the bestiary on some of the wow sites depending on what kinda pet you want, I use a cat pet most of the time. They are good dps wise and they crit alot. Not to mention some of the cat's get skills like dash wich can make him have like a warrior's charge w/o the stun. I train then to have better armor and stam than anything (for leveling or grinding purposes). Really man it's all about preferance of attack speed now. Almost every pet is about the same. it's just how you train them now and which speed of DPS you'd like.

Tekk the leaper has slow AS, but better than normal armor. Turtles are good tanks, etc etc. Cat's for non tank duty or light tank duty

Bears, pigs, and turtles are good tanks i use a pig for instances. A cat is good for farming kills mobs fast and you spend less time resting

Mazz, the pink flamingo, is EXTREMELY slow in run speed. Go for the Strider Clutchmother (Shes Teal w/ unique skin) if you want a high HP med dps style pet. Cats are great, claw bite etc, but until 30, they dont get dash or prowl. Turtles are awesome tanks, the best IMO. A Boar isn't bad at catching runners in PvP, such as a hunter w/ cheetah, dazzed ftw. Bears look cute when they run, and are great tanks too. Crabs run slow, but can still take a beating. Raptors are good, the equiv of a bear except w/ higher attack on some. Humar the Pridelord is a unique catskin, lvl 23 rare in the barrens. Black wolves look cool as heck, and boost your first melee hit. Owls/fleshrippers/bats are pretty good at running, and w/ 2min eyes of the beast (Enhanced via talents) you can scout over water very rapidly. I Use humar, and Tekk the leaper (Equiv skin w/ deviate stalker)(Black) I also have a black wolf, and am debating on who to keep. But yes, its all based on looks. They all have balancing factors to consider. There is no PERFECT pet. End of story. Not even the 1.00 AS bat is perfect.

If you want a pet to tank a turtle is the best. If you a want a pet for pvp a tiger is the best. Tiger don't have good amor but they do more damage. And in pvp have you ever seen any one fighting the pet while the master is shooting at them? So if you go for pvp use a tiger or their family.

Humar the Pridelord. Unique look, 1.3 attack speed. The rake is 1.2, but humar looks cooler. 8 hour respawn.
Turtles are NOT the best tanking pets. Turtles, Crabs, Gorillas, and many others are all equally good. Although the turtle with its new wannabe pally shield can be healed better, it still isnt "The best".
Oh and, Tigers aren't the best cats.... Any 1.0 Attack speed cat is better than a tiger... infact, a 1.2 is as well. Tigers are 1.3. ~Pops your bubble~. Research the class, try new things, then talk.

I suggest a bear because,
1 Decent damage and it helps
2 High armor rating so great for tanking
3 also not picky on what they eat fish, meat, etc
4 its a bear who doest want a pet bear lol

Bears are not high nor even decent damage.... it's a good tank, not a good dps.... Windserpents are good, but you need to find a site with pet lists, and make sure you're not taming one with caster stats. (Some windserpents come with higher int and lower sta/str... the int boosts nothing but the loss of the sta/str is noticeable) The shock ability is great in PvP to catch runners, but it burns too much focus to be a major boost. Although I agree it is good, I prefer a pet using bite/claw... ^^
