Rogue Overview / Guide

Introduction

Since dungeons and dragons rogues have always been the ultimate dexterity characters and it stays the same in World of Warcraft. The prime difference between most game's Rogues and WoW Rogues is the combo point system. Rogues can also specialize in any of three different talents, Assasination, Combat and Subtlety. You can also further specialize your rogue based on the primary professions you take. For the listed reasons above you will find that the rogue is the fiercest of the PvP and PvM characters. Able to solo some of the hardest monsters and take down players higher level due to some sneaky tactics.

Combo Point System

Combo points are gained by using your special abilities. These combo building moves generally do more damage than your standard attack. The rogue also has what are called "Finishing Moves". Finishing moves can vary from doing damage to increasing your attack speed. The degree of the finishing moves strength is based on the amount of combo points built up against a specific target. Combo points do not carry over from target to target. When you are faced with an extremely difficult opponent the best strategy is generally to build up your combo points high and unleash a move that decimates the opponent.

Specializing Your Rogue

Talents

You can find an online talent selector that will let you browse the talents and pick which ones you want over HERE

Assasination : Assasination talents generally have to do with the rogues assasination focused skills. Backstab and Garote are examples. A good portion of these talents increase critical rates and overall damage for assasination skills.

Combat : Combat talents involve increasing the rogues overall fighting ability. They range from increasing dodge rates to critical rates to special attacks.

Subtlety : Subtlety talents are focused on the rogues stealth based abilities. The rogue has abilities that they use directly out of stealth. They are generally Backstab-ish abilities that render the opponent helpless for a short period of time or do a large amount of opening damage.

As you can easily see, you can benefit from all of the rogues abilities in both PvP and PvM. Your best bet is to get an idea of what you want your rogue to do and see what fits you best. Nothing prevents you from picking talents from ALL of the categories, you will just be less specialized.

Professions

Im not going to give a list of every professions ability but I will give a quick synopsis of what the rogue benefits from each profession.

Blacksmithing / Mining : The rogue benefits from Blacksmithing are less than great. They can make new daggers. They don't use heavy armor so any of the armor made is of no use. It can be used to make money. But if you plan on PvP I wouldn't suggest this.

Alchemy / Herbalism : The rogue benefits from Herbalism in having a nice arsenal of potions at his disposal. This helps both for leveling up faster as well as PvP. On the other hand, these same potions can be purchased from a guildmate or other players. Good for PvM but not as good for PvP

Engineering / Mining : In my opinion one of the best options for the rogue. Items made by engineers can generally only be used by engineers. The types of items availible to engineers are also geared towards rogues in a lot of ways. This is accepted as the best PvP route.

Leatherworking / Skinning : This is another good route to go. The rogues best armor is leather so being able to make your own is a nice ability. You can also increase the armor rating of leather with leatherworking. Yet again though, you can buy these items from players and vendors.

Last notes
Do what you want, be inventive. People don't find new ideas by following others.
