The Light and How to Swing It: Ret talents in Cataclysm

With the Light as his strength, Gregg Reece of The Light and How to Swing It faces down the demons of the Burning Legion, the undead of the Scourge, and soon, an entire flight of black dragons. Please send screenshots as well as any comments to my email at gregg@wow.com.

Yes, yes. I know the last time I wrote about retribution talents that Blizzard came out the next day saying that it was scrapping essentially everything in those versions of the trees. Since then, all three trees have undergone massive (and I’m not exaggerating here) overhauls. However, things have started to stabilize and while these talents may not be final, the tree is a lot closer than any of the previous revisions to what we’ll see when the expansion hits.

Ghostcrawler on the future of totems

Earlier this week, Ghostcrawler (lead systems designer) responded to some posts regarding totems. There have been some doom-and-gloom comments and, unfortunately, very few positive ones. (Nice to see Strawberry get a mention in one of GC’s replies.) Since I’m now the elemental shaman columnist here, I thought I’d weigh in with my own thoughts on the matter.

Quote:
Why does a DK not have to choose between horn of winter and desecration?

Because that is pretty much all the DK gets.

The shaman on the other hand gets to choose among Strength of Earth Totem, Windfury Totem, Wrath of Air Totem, Flametongue Totem, Tremor Totem, Healing Stream Totem, resistance Totems and Earthbind Totem, which doesn’t even count Bloodlust / Heroism, and things like Unleashed Rage or Elemental Oath. If your buff was as competitive as theirs and you had so much versatility, we fear we’d see raids with many, many shaman in them. As it is, there’s still a good chance for 3 shaman in a 25-player raid, while the DKs might get 2 slots if they’re lucky.

You should get a slot because you are a good player, not because your buff rules.

From what GC is saying here, we can see that because we have multiple potential choices in buffs via totems, these buffs won’t be quite as good as the ones provided from other classes. The problem with that is that even in a min-max raid environment, the shaman selects totems based on what other buffs are provided, rather than being brought along to specifically provide totem buffs. It’s also worth noting that most of the differences between the buffs a shaman provides and those from other classes boil down to either range, activation or both. As it stands at the moment, you will make sure you have one shaman for Wrath of Air and an enhancement shaman for talented Strength of Earth. That will cover the only shaman-specific buffs you require for the average raid. In fact, you are more likely to stack paladins in a raid than shaman, to get three blessings on everyone (Sanc, Kings, Might or Wisdom, although enhancement shaman and retribution paladin would like to have all four), compared to having one shaman dropping Wrath of Air, Totem of Wrath/Flametongue and possibly Mana Spring, with a second doing Windfury and Strength of Earth, which will cover all of the “primary” raid buffs.

EU Battle.net Servers Trouble

Today we have a sad news for all European players(not sure if this applies to other regions, notify in the comments). The authentication servers went poof for the first time, and we are offered this message right after we start up the game as a Breaking News:

Blizzard Quote:
We are aware of the issues affecting players, and we are actively investigating the issues at this time. During this time the service may be restarted to address these issues. Thank you for your patience.

Currently you may or may not log into your account in game, and you may experience drastic drop of performance during loading the content(such as mulitplayer, profile, and achievements). We know achievements were disabled for a while, not sure if they are fixed. I will update this post as more information shows up.

UPDATE: It seems everything is working now.

New Cataclysm Beta Launcher FAQ

Below you will find the answers to common questions about the new Launcher being added this week. For more information and discussion, please review this announcement: https://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/t…01168&sid=2000

Q. How much data is in each stage for a full Cataclysm installation?
A. In general, about 5% of the data is red (required), about 70% of the data is yellow (base gameplay), and about 25% of the data is green (extended data).

Q. How is data assigned to each stage?
A. Data is assigned to each stage based on the relative need for that data. Red is required to get into the game, yellow is data needed for base gameplay, and green is for variants of base game data (higher-resolution graphics, alternate sounds, other flavor data).

Q. How do I know when the entire game is downloaded?
A. The progress bar will reach 100%, and then will not be shown on subsequent launches (until there is a new patch released).

Q. Will I still be able to download patches from mirror sites?
A. Yes, standalone patches will still work.

Q. Will the downloader still use P2P / bittorrent?
A. Yes.

Q. Will large patches still be downloadable in advance through the background downloader?
A. Yes.

Q. Will it be possible to download the entire game before I begin playing it?
A. Yes.

Q. Is this mandatory?
A. No. Users will have the option of playing before all game data is downloaded and applied. They may choose to enter the game, or they may choose to wait.

Q. On patch days, will I be able to start the patch download before the realms are back up?
A. Yes.

Q. You are requiring a reinstall of the beta client. Does this mean I will have to reinstall my WoW retail client when I buy Cataclysm?
A. No. As with the prior two expansions, there will be a lengthy patching process to migrate users from the prior major version (3.0) to the new major version (4.0). Data for this patch will be downloaded in advance via the background downloader.

Q. Will I still be able to download a patch once and copy it to multiple machines?
A. Yes, as long as you have fully downloaded the entire patch. However, as with the prior expansions, patches from a previous major version (all patches prior to 4.0) will not work with the new major version.

Q. What if I have a low bandwidth connection?
A. After the initial beta release, users with connections below 1 MB/sec will be required to download all data before entering the game. Users with connections above 1 MB/sec will have the option of entering the game before all data has been downloaded and applied. Users at any bandwidth may exit the game and resume the download if they find the play experience undesirable.

Q. How will this affect new characters logging in for the first time?
A. If a player chooses to enter the game while content is still downloading, data for the introductory race video and zone fly-through will be applied at the loading screen to ensure a smooth game introduction. This is currently only functional for new worgen characters. Other races have not yet been optimized, which may lead to issues with the opening fly-through if they are loaded while content is still being downloaded.

In-Game Footage as Cinematics
Sort of taking it off subject to to start with, but it’s inevitable that eventually computer graphics will reach the point where there’s no such thing as pre-rendered cinematics. But we’ve all been hearing that for a while, and while we are getting closer, we’re definitely not there yet.

We don’t think we are. We don’t pretend we are, and our in-house cinematics department is bigger than ever working on cinematics that are better than ever.

Regarding World of Warcraft – Each World of Warcraft release, including the initial and subsequent expansions, has had a single cinematic. It’s what plays when you first launch the game. This intro-cinematic approach has been done primarily because, as an MMO, pulling players out of a multiplayer environment where anything could be going on at the time they hit the point where the cinematic could play is risky. Say you’re PvP flagged and a cinematic starts to play. Or you happen to be having a very heated discussion in guild chat, etc. etc. It’s not an ideal play space to be popping up full screen videos. The story was intended to play out within the game world itself through text, voice, and effects.

With Wrathgrate we tried something new. Using our in-house video team which had been making many of the machinima trailers for us (most of which can be found here http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/downloads/movies.html) for promotional use, as well as commercials, the South Park episode, on and on, instead used it as a way to show events to the player in a more cinematic approach. We had come a long way and with new technology a lot of the previous concerns were either completely squashed or had working solutions to remove a lot of the potential aggravation caused by interrupting the game.

The response was extremely positive. People really enjoyed it, and so it was used again as a way to give Arthas a more epic and cinematic end. Certainly befitting of a King. (Kael and Illy should have been so lucky…)

So, those are not pre-rendered cinematics, they’re clearly using in-game assets, we don’t claim otherwise. However, we do claim that they are completely kick ass and know that most people enjoy what they add to the game. Key word ‘add’, because they are truly additions which took nothing away from the intro cinematic each release has had.

The Wrathgate and Fall of the Lich King allowed us to really take it up a notch and deliver something spactacular.

Now, on to the subject of StarCraft II – In our opinion it also has amazing cinematics. The in-engine story telling in StarCraft II, which you say has detracted from the cinematics, is comparative to this – http://i616.photobucket.com/albums/t…k/855f805c.jpg from the original StarCraft.

We think we’ve come a long way.

Bottom line, we still have an incredibly talented cinematics team and we’ll continue to produce the amazing pre-rendered cinematics you’ve come to know and love. (Source)

Paladin (Forums / 3.3.5 Talent Calculator / Cataclysm Talent Calculator / Beta Skills/Talents)
Retribution Rotation
The rotation won’t be 121212 under any circumstances.

At the very basic level you could call it 1112111311121113 but almost every class boils down to something similar if you ignore all of the other talents and abilities. What will keep Ret from falling into a rotation that stable are:

1) Having to manage other attacks. Judgement isn’t the kind of button you eventually get around to using.
2) Getting Holy Power coming in at somewhat unpredictable (but not completely random) intervals.
3) Dealing with procs like Art of War.

Seals do way too much damage on live and in Cataclysm. We haven’t worried about that damage yet because we’re still working out a basic rotation that feels good. We also are mindful that deemphasizing white attacks of any kind risks making haste less attractive. (Source)

Dan Stahl highlights more of Star Trek Online’s future direction

Star Trek Online‘s Dan Stahl has been fairly vocal since he took the executive producer post at the beginning of last month. We had our own chance to speak with him recently, where he discussed everything from the then-upcoming Season 2 content to the rumors about the game adopting a free-to-play model. His most recent interview at ZAM covers several of the same pieces of territory, but as one would expect with the time elapsed and the release of Season 2, there are several new pieces of information within.

The weekly episodes are one of the major points of discussion, with the first one premiering in late August. Stahl discusses the episodes focusing around the Deferi, a race with ties to both the Federation and the Klingons, but not explicitly allied with either. He also discusses plans for an overhaul to exploration, likening the current system to “a small box where you fly around and go through random doors,” something that the team is planning on changing for Season 3. The full interview is well worth a read for what it contains — nothing earth-shattering, but more signs that Star Trek Online‘s direction is getting progressively stronger.

Shifting Perspectives: Answers to questions nobody asked

Every Tuesday, Shifting Perspectives explores issues affecting feral/restoration druids and those who group with them. This week, we get a beta key, and maybe a little sloshed.

After getting a beta key, it was my intent to hit the servers and write an FAQ/reader mailbag-type column, but I’m not going to do that today. I’m going to answer my questions, not yours. I don’t care about any of you.

Well, that’s not true. I do care. But I’ve been in the beta for less than a week and:

  • Half the stuff we’ve read about has been scrapped or just hasn’t been implemented.
  • The other half is a writhing mass of angry, toxic bugs.
  • The servers crash like that drunk buddy who swore he’d only be on your couch for a few days but is still there weeks later and you poke him with a stick every morning to make sure he’s alive and unfortunately he is.
  • About the most I could do without pulling several consecutive all-nighters was level a worgen and troll druid to level 13 as quickly as I could. Oh, and wipe a Blackwing Caverns group several times over.

Readers beware: while I may not answer any useful questions past the cut, there are still a few serious spoilers here.

Atreian Soul Healers Slash Prices

Greetings all~

Good news!

Atreian Soul Healers Slash Prices

Greetings Daevas,

The Soul Healers of Atreia have banded together to share a weeklong celebration of life with the rest of Atreia! For one week, all citizens of Asmodae and Elysea can use the services of a Soul Healer for only 1 Kinah! This temporarily slashed pricing begins after the server maintenance period this week on August 4, 2010 and runs until next week’s regular server maintenance.

-The Aion Community Team

Posted Image

So, I know a lot of people have been clamoring for cut-price soul healing (not to be confused with Budget Soul-Healing, that shady back alley company run by shugo where you’re lucky to escape with all your appendages.) and it seems NCsoft have finally listened!

On a somewhat unexplained note (Queue X-Files music here) Maintenance for America is expected to last twelve hours. Europe is still expected to take only three. The truth is out there.

Enjoy your cheap soul healing, and don’t be afraid to die this week in the name of duty, for cheap teleportation, or just for a laugh.

Enjoy!

StarCraft 2 Beats Original StarCraft in UK Sales

Following on from our UK chart success for StarCraft 2, GfK Chart-Track has confirmed to MCV that in five days of the game being on sale, StarCraft 2 has sold more copies than the first game managed since it went on sale way back in 1998> base don these kind of figures I think once Blizzard release their final sales figures we are going to see an outstanding result for the game. As soon as we get hold of those figures we’ll let you know.

Blizzard to patrol Moon Guard’s Goldshire for harassment, erotic role playing

Blizzard announced via the customer support forum that it will take proactive steps to quell some of the unsavory behavior on Moon Guard (US), a server notable for its infamous Goldshire inn naughty shenanigans. After a father posted about canceling his son’s account because of the general and trade chats on the Moon Guard server, Blizzard customer service responded in definitive terms — Moon Guard’s Goldshire will be actively “patrolled” by customer service team members.
