MMO-Champion – News
We've been getting a lot of calls about the character slot change, so to try to let everyone know what we're doing all at once, here's an announcement about the subject.
First of all, there were lots of accounts out there that had extra character slots beyond the limits of their current subscription.
We made a recent change that fixed that issue and brought the limits back to where they were supposed to be.
However, we did that change without prewarning you folks…which was an error on our part.
So we're going to do a one-week rollback on that change to allow you to shuffle stuff around on your characters and ensure that the characters you want are left in your remaining slots before we reimplement the change.
On Tuesday, August 24th, we'll roll back the change. At that time, you'll be able to access all your characters, regardless of our account slot limitations.
For one week (7 days) you can freely exchange stuff back and forth between your characters.
Then on Tuesday, August 31st, we'll reimplement the fix and accounts will be restricted to their proper number of character slots.
BEFORE AUGUST 31st, just make sure that the last characters you log into the game are the ones that you want to keep. Then, when we reimplement the fix, you'll be left with your most recently-logged characters, and you'll be good to go.
We apologize for the inconvience we created by not pre-announcing this change. But this should let you do all the shuffling you need to do before the fix goes back in.

Can a video game publisher be successfully sued for releasing a game that makes players want to play it compulsively? That’s the question of the hour in the USA, as Lineage II player Craig Smallwood levied a million negligence suit against NCsoft for making the game too addictive. Smallwood found himself playing the MMO for over 20,000 hours in the last five years, to the point where he is unable to function normally in real life — and he claims it’s NCsoft’s fault for not warning him in advance. Smallwood’s gameplay averaged around 11 hours per day during that period.
Surprisingly, a federal judge has allowed the suit to proceed against the South Korean publisher, stating that “the court finds that plaintiff has stated a claim for both negligence and gross negligence.” NCsoft has appealed and asked the judge to dismiss the case. The situation gets more interesting when you consider that Smallwood had his Lineage II accounts banned for alleged grey market RMT activity, although he claims that was a ploy by NCsoft to force players like himself to move over to Aion.
Video game addiction is no new issue, to be sure, but it’s interesting that this case seeks to shift the blame from the player to the game company itself. This raises a whole host of new questions. Should publishers be required to slap their products with warning labels? Is there no personal responsibility when it comes to playing MMORPGs? We will have to wait and see if Smallwood’s suit succeeds, and what, if any, fallout may occur from the attempt.
NCsoft sued for making Lineage II too darned addicting originally appeared on Massively on Fri, 20 Aug 2010 09:00:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

MMORPG.COM News
Just checking in with the latest information from the public test server (PTS). Remember that if you need to download the PTS installation, you can check the official post on the subject and if you’re having problems, please feel free to post about them on the official forums or our very own Test Server Board. There’s also a how to thread for setting up your own installation.
I would much appreciate it if somebody from the European test server could let us know how things are going. Who is responsible for which server firsts, what top legions are becoming established, and does /3 actually have any good conversation on it?
I’m on the NA PTS and today the server achieved its first level 50 characters. Grats to Intricate of No Life Brigade on the Asmodian side who appears to have been the first of several 50s. The race to 55 is still not complete and we wish all the contestants good luck. The Abyss was just beginning to become active today with several artifacts being taken by No Life Brigade (Asmodian side), Focus (Asmodian side) and Vaizel FTW (Elyos). I wonder what server those Elyos came from… I’m looking forward to some good fights in the future as the competition shapes up.
Personally, I’ve managed to level at a pretty leisurely pace as you can no doubt tell since I’m sitting here writing this rather than leveling. The new gliding mechanic with a speed up when you hit the “w” key is very nicely done. I’ve now bought my first pet and taken the liberty of naming it after one of our administrators as is fashionable these days.
I’ve been in both of the solo instances available. Basically, for Haramel I barely managed to run two instances (had a bar left until 23 when I came out the first time). There’s a very distinct difference between my first entrance and my exit. One could say that I came, I flew, and I shoveled my way out. Lower level characters are going to love this instance.
The Nightmare instance has a lot of potential for those who like to try doing instances with different skill sets. You do indeed become Kromede in Nightmare, you obtain 3 special skills for use only in that instance (the Rotan, an aoe spell, and a healing spell on a long cool down). These spells allow you to play differently than your character might normally play. It’s just a lot of fun. I really think it’s a well needed addition for level 37-44 characters.
Here are a few screenshots from the instance that I took, including one from the library of what appears to be backwards text. I feel that I should be studying this for a potential subliminal message, although I’m feeling a little tired right now. For those of you that have been going crazy over Kromede, I snapped a special screenshot just for you below.
Additionally, on the NA PTS we obtained 1000 tokens from a survey that can be used to trade for temporary gear. I’ve used around 400 of mine for the Epic (and very pretty!) wings that I’ll probably never bother to obtain on the real servers since I have access to the 6 month wings. Many others have bought their own kitteh with around 100 of their tokens.

So far my experience on this PTS is going much better than my last experience. The xp gain is much higher than the last time the PTS was up and it seems like everything is going smoothly as far as the server performance goes. There are some current problems that I hope the community will bring to the attention of NCWest on their official forums (NA PTS forum or EU English PTS forum), especially with the user interface (some quests still in Korean, incorrectly sized windows, etc.). There have been some complaints of crashes as well, although I haven’t yet been affected. All-in-all the PTS has been fairly fun and hopefully everybody will continue to enjoy their time on the PTS.

Dark Phoenix Mount Video
It seems that the Dark Phoenix mount is fairly popular these days, here is a short video of how the model looks. As a reminder, the Dark Phoenix will be rewarded through the new Guild Achievement/Rewards system, you will have to unlock it via a Guild Achievement, have enough reputation with your guild to buy it, and of course, enough gold.

Archaeology Preview
There isn’t much known about Archaeology at this point but a couple of spells and some extra information have been added to the game files. Even if Path of the Titans is gone it looks like the main idea behind Archaeology remains the same and you will have to hunt for artifacts throughout the world.
Rewards
The only thing we know about Archaeology rewards is from the Press Tour 2 months ago, rewards are known to be "cosmetic only" like pets, or toys, but a few of them will have actual effects. We really don’t know much more but a few people speculated that the Skeletal Raptor Mount and Skeletal Raptor Pet might be Archaeology rewards. It would make sense, with the "Fossil" research branch in the game files. (But again, this is pure speculation at this point)
Research Branch
It seems that the profession includes multiple research branches:
- Dwarf
- Draenei
- Fossil
- Night Elf
- Nerubian
- Orc
- Tol’vir
- Troll
- Vrykul
- Other
Research Sites
The known research sites are:
- Stone Cairn Dig Site (Elwynn Forest)
- Ironband’s Excavation Site (Loch Modan)
- Ironbeard’s Tomb (Wetlands)
- Whelgar’s Excavation Site (Wetlands)
- Greenwarden’s Fossil Bank (Wetlands)
- Circle of Inner Binding (Arathi Highlands)
- Circle of West Binding (Arathi Highlands)
- Circle of East Binding (Arathi Highlands)
- Circle of Outer Binding (Arathi Highlands)
- Witherbark Dig Site (Arathi Highlands)
- Thandol Span (Arathi Highlands/Wetlands)
- Dun Garok Dig Site (Hillsbrad Foothills)
- Shindra’Alor Dig Site (Hinterlands)
- Altar of Zul Dig Site (Hinterlands)
- Jintha’Alor Lower City Dig Site (Hinterlands)
- Jintha’Alor Upper City Dig Site (Hinterlands)
- Agol’watha Dig Site (Hinterlands)
It looks like only the Dwarf branch of archeology is implemented for the moment, and it’s most likely not complete.
Trainers
Of course.
Spells
These spells are part of the Archaeology profession.

We removed the prereq chain from Divine Illumination to Aura Mastery and Light of Dawn. We had the prerq in there to make sure paladins didn’t skip over a powerful group utility talent in a perhaps selfish attempt to enhance their personal healing per second, but we do acknowledge that it is far less useful in say 5-player dungeons. Oh, hi there, readers! You’ll have to excuse me; I was just enjoying a little quiet time in my quarters. My starship quarters. Inside my starship. Because I have those now.
Yes, among many other features, Season 2: Ancient Enemies introduced starship interiors to Star Trek Online. Continuing from last week’s discussion of diplomacy, one of Season 2’s other big additions, I thought we’d spend this edition of Captain’s Log examining ship interiors. Plus, we’ll take a special side trip into the future to consider what else STO fans can look forward to — in the future!

Lineage II : The Chaotic Throne
Hot off the press, Aion Bunny notified me that she has been given quite a few images from Aion 2.0. The original images we were given weren’t exclusive – they were part of a press package. We now do have exclusive images especially for AionSource from NCWest.
While we will see a lot of images now that the PTS is open, these are some very nice quality images of what is to come in the expansion. So enjoy them.
Since this post has changed to once again show exclusive images, you can see the previous images from this post in my photo gallery on AionSource.
